Cohen Hails Supreme Court's Decision Upholding Domestic Abuser Firearm Ban

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, today released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court's Voisine v. United States 6-2 decision, which upheld a broad federal firearm ban for domestic abusers:

"This decision by the Supreme Court reiterates that the second amendment is not absolute," said Congressman Cohen. "If the Court can rule decisively that Congress has broad authority to ban domestic abusers from owning a gun without running afoul of the Second Amendment, then surely Congress can pass a measure to stop suspected terrorists from getting guns. Senator Susan Collin's bipartisan, compromise bill to do just that deserves consideration, and I support efforts of my colleagues in the House to advance it. It simply defies logic to suggest that domestic abusers or terrorists should be able to buy guns."
