2 Weeks Later: Burr Continues to Stall on Debate Challenge

Statement

Date: June 21, 2016
Location: Raleigh, NC
Issues: Elections

Two weeks after Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate Deborah Ross accepted four invitations to debate, incumbent Senator Burr continues to stall and refuses to defend his record of putting Washington special interests ahead of North Carolina voters. While Deborah has accepted four invitations to debate, Richard Burr has refused to even consider more than one. Burr's continued stall comes as his reelection is being seen as more and more vulnerable. Deborah has closed the race to a statistical tie, out raised the two-term incumbent senator in the first quarter, and Politico has called North Carolina's US Senate race the "biggest riser in ranking" of Senate seats most likely to flip.

Statement from Cole Leiter, Ross Press Secretary:

"Of course Richard Burr has no interest in answering for his record of putting big money and Washington special interests ahead of voters in our state. He knows his plan to privatize Medicare while taking $1 million from insurance companies won't fly with the people who elected him. So, instead, he chooses to hide and hope big money and special interests come to his rescue this November. The problem for Burr is that North Carolina is ready for a change and for a US Senator who will stand up for working people -- and they know that's not Burr."

To ensure all North Carolinians are able to hear from their next US Senator, Deborah has accepted four invitations to debate: WECT in Wilmington, WTVD in Raleigh, Time Warner Cable, and the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters. To date, Burr has refused to entertain more than one debate invitation at a time.
