Deborah Ross Statement on Juneteenth: Today we reflect, remember, and rejoice in progress of the American Promise

Statement

Deborah Ross, Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate today, released the following statement on Juneteenth:
"Over 150 years ago today, Major General Gordon Granger and federal soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to deliver the news of the end of the Civil War and the emancipation from slavery. That day, thousands finally received their piece of the American promise--that all people are created equal.

"Today, we all have a role to play in making sure that everyone is treated equally and provided the opportunity to access the fullness of the American Dream. It's up to each of us to uphold and further the freedoms of all Americans by increasing the wages of working people and providing greater access to quality education, healthcare, housing, and voting rights.

"Today, we remember that we all still have work to do to ensure that these freedoms, and the opportunities they give us, are realized for everyone. As we attend work, school, and places of worship remember that this great country was built with the help of men and women who contributed to making our nation great even when its basic rights and privileges were denied to them.
"But as we rejoice about how far America has come, let us not forget that there is still much work to do. We all have a duty to preserve and extend the freedoms we have worked so hard to attain. As we carry this work forward, above all else, it is important we walk together."
