Issue Position: Protecting the Environment

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2016

When making decisions, I will always ask what effect a given proposal will have on our environment. I believe California has come a long way in controlling greenhouse gas emissions, the main cause of pollution and global warming (I believe global warming is real). We must work with our State's business leaders to agree upon real strategies that will effectively lower emissions, but at the same time, not put financial burdens on our residents through higher gas prices. Below are additional issues that I care about:

Preserving Open Space: On the Concord Naval Weapons Station, we have identified 2,500 acres of land that will become one of the largest open space areas managed by the East Bay Regional Parks District. Our region is beautiful, with amazing hillsides and protected open space areas. I support our current Urban Limit Line as a way to continue to protect open space and agricultural land in our region. Preserving open space will be an issue I will continue to care about if I am elected to represent you.
Water Conservation: In California, we live in a new era where water conservation is a fact of life for every one of our residents. As a Councilmember and former Mayor, Concord instituted a first-of-its kind interest-free loan program for homeowners interested in replacing their yards with drought-tolerant landscaping. I am proud of how residents are changing their lifestyles to save water every day. As a State, I believe California can do more to encourage conservation and technological advances that allow us to use less water in our everyday lives.
Encouraging Solar Energy: Solar is taking off as a way to save on energy costs both in our homes and in local businesses. As a Councilmember and former Mayor, I am proud of the program we developed to offer interest-free loans to homeowners who want to install solar panels on their homes. Like in water conservation, I believe there is more we can do to encourage technological advances that can help us save energy.
