House Freedom Caucus Calls for a Vote on Impeachment of the IRS Commissioner

The House Judiciary Committee held a second hearing examining the case for impeachment of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner John Koskinen Wednesday. The House Freedom Caucus released the following statement:

"Today, the Judiciary Committee heard the case for impeachment of the IRS Commissioner. Mr. Koskinen is guilty of gross negligence, dereliction of duty, and violating the public trust and therefore meets the legal standard for impeachment of a public official.

Koskinen stonewalled and impeded congressional investigations into the IRS targeting of conservative organizations. He disregarded two subpoenas and three preservation orders, and allowed 422 backup tapes containing as many as 24,000 emails relevant to the investigation to be destroyed under his watch.

No private citizen could get away with what Mr. Koskinen did.

Federal officials must be accountable to the American people. The Freedom Caucus calls for the House of Representatives to hold a vote on impeachment to restore the public's trust."
