Turner Continues Fight for CDBG Receives Assurances on House Floor

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Michael R. Turner (R-Centerville) continued his efforts to restore funding for fiscal year 2006 CDBG (Community Development Block Grants) on the House floor today.
During debate on the Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, the Judiciary, the District of Columbia, and Independent Agencies Appropriations Act, Congressman Turner engaged in a colloquy with Subcommittee Chairman Joe Knollenberg (R-MI) regarding CDBG funding.
The colloquy proceeded as follows:
CONGRESSMAN TURNER: I thank the gentleman for yielding. Mr. Chairman, I thank you for your support of the Community Development Block Grant program, and for working so hard to find funds for CDBG in the bill. As the appropriations process continues and the bill moves to conference, will the chairman continue to work to find additional funds to offset the reduction in the CDBG for FY 2006? I yield to the chairman for a reply.
CHAIRMAN KNOLLENBERG: I thank the gentleman from Ohio for working with me on CDBG and for his efforts to help fund this program. Restoring the funds for CDBG was our highest priority after funding assistance for the neediest families in our society. Funding for CDBG remains one of our highest priorities and I will do everything I can to return the program as close to the 2005 enacted level as possible. That was my intent during the development of this bill and it remains my intent as we continue to final passage of an Appropriations Act for 2006.
Afterward, Congressman Turner commented, "I appreciate the efforts of Chairman Knollenberg and the Appropriations Committee to help restore funding to CDBG. Yesterday during a Saving America's Cities working group meeting, we once again heard several comments about the importance of CDBG. Those remarks parallel what we have heard in several oversight hearings of the Subcommittee on Federalism and the Census."
