Catherine Cortez Masto Kicks Off Black History Month With African Americans For Cortez Masto

Former Nevada Attorney General and Democratic candidate for United States Senate Catherine Cortez Masto kicked off Black History Month today in Las Vegas with members of "African Americans for Cortez Masto." Joined by elected officials and members of the African American community, Cortez Masto highlighted the clear choice in the race for U.S. Senate.

While Catherine Cortez Masto is a problem solver who works with both parties to get results for Nevadans, her opponent, Congressman Heck, opposes increasing the minimum wage, voted three times against equal pay for equal work, and opposed Governor Sandoval's bipartisan increase in education funding. Congressman Heck votes with his Party in Washington 90% of the time, and even wants to abolish the Department of Education.

"Our economy needs to work for everyone, no matter your race, your gender, or your economic background," said Cortez Masto. "In the Senate, I will work across the aisle to solve problems like ending pay discrimination, increasing the minimum wage, and improving education. In contrast, my opponent, Congressman Heck, votes with his Party's leaders in Washington against Nevada families."

"Catherine Cortez Masto is not afraid to take on the tough fights -- no matter how big or tough the opponent may be," said Hannah Brown, former President of the Urban Chamber of Commerce. "Whether it was standing up to the big banks to get millions of dollars to help keep Nevadans in their homes after the economic crisis, or going after domestic abusers and cracking down on human traffickers, there is no fight Catherine won't take on when it comes to protecting and helping the people of Nevada. And that's why I'm supporting her for United States Senate.

"In 2013, as Chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, Catherine and I worked together with members of both Parties to make our streets safer by passing historic reforms to crack down on human trafficking," said Nevada Assemblyman Jason Frierson. "But while Catherine will work across the aisle to solve problems and help Nevadans, the same cannot be said of her opponent. Instead of helping hard-working Nevadans by ensuring they are paid a fair wage, Congressman Heck opposes increasing the minimum wage, votes with his Party in Washington 90% of the time, and has voted to cut funding for Nevada schools by millions of dollars."

"Racial inequality and injustice is still pervasive in our communities and the fight that leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks began decades ago continues on today," said Nevada Senator Pat Spearman. "To address this injustice, this past legislative session lawmakers from both sides of the aisle came together with Governor Sandoval to pass a historic education funding bill. But instead of recognizing the needs of our state's children, Congressman Heck does not support the bipartisan education bill we passed. Apparently Congressman Heck does not believe in the need to provide our children with a world-class education and ensure that our teachers and schools have the resources and support necessary to make that happen.

"As if failing to fight for our state's children wasn't enough, Congressman Heck has also actively worked against Nevada women and families -- voting three times against measures that would end pay discrimination," Spearman added. "It is time to stop the gridlock in Washington and that starts with electing Catherine as our next Senator -- not Congressman Heck. Congressman Heck does not stand for the issues that matter to me, my family, friends, and community. Catherine does, and that's why I'm supporting her for United States Senate."
