Young Applauds Passage of Military Caregiver Legislation

Iowa Congressman David Young today applauded passage of the Support Our Military Caregivers Act (H.R. 3989), legislation he cosponsored to improve support of family members caring for seriously wounded veterans by reforming the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Family Caregiver Program.

"I'm pleased to see this important legislation pass the U.S. House of Representatives with bipartisan support," Congressman Young said. "Our service members have made great sacrifices in defense of our freedoms, and when our wounded return home and need care, they deserve the best available. It's critical our military caregivers - who have sometimes altered their lives to take care of these American heroes - have needed resources and support too."

The Family Caregiver Program, authorized by Congress to provide necessary supports to family members caring for seriously wounded veterans, has experienced recent delays with regard to approval of benefits. The Support Our Military Caregivers Act seeks to address present issues by directing the VA to contract with a third party in order to organize and reduce the current backlog.
