Himes Supports Obama's Immigration Actions

Statement

Yesterday, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) released the following statement after his vote against H.Res. 639, which authorizes Speaker Ryan to appear as amicus curiae on behalf of the House of Representatives in the matter of United States v. Texas:

"This morning, I voted against a resolution allowing Speaker Ryan -- on behalf of the entire House -- to file an amicus brief with the Supreme Court opposing President Obama's immigration actions. I agree with the President that if Congress will not enact comprehensive immigration reform, the executive branch must act to keep otherwise law-abiding families together and allow them to pursue the American dream.

"The Supreme Court is set to consider the legality of the President's actions to expand the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and create a new Deferred Action for Parental Accountability (DAPA) program. Together, these programs will allow up to 4.9 million undocumented immigrants who were either brought to the U.S. as children or whose children are American citizens to stay in our country and work for three years.

"I'm hopeful that the Court will act justly and in the best interests of families and the nation. Going forward, I will continue to support strong efforts to fix our country's broken immigration system to make us a more compassionate and prosperous nation."

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in United States v. Texas on April 18, 2016. A ruling is expected later in the summer.
