Honda and Campos duck down

KPIX-TV did a piece recently on the congressional race between U.S. Rep Mike Honda and his top challenger, Ro Khanna, in the 17th District. Khanna got plenty of airtime in the lengthy piece. He made the case that Honda was dogged by an ethics investigation while he -- Khanna -- was declining PAC money.

The KPIX piece also carried the results of a poll, showing Honda leading 31 to 25 percent for Khanna. While that sounds initially promising for the incumbent, it could also reveal dangers for Honda, who defeated Khanna by less than 4 percentage points in 2014. Khanna, who is also a Democrat, stands to pick up the votes of Republicans and independents in November.

Here's the kicker: Honda declined to be interviewed for the KPIX piece. His campaign people said he was "booked solid" until the primary. An extraordinarily dumb call. He might just as well have given free airtime to the man who wants to oust him.
