DeLauro Announces National Take-Back Day Locations In Connecticut

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03) today announced locations in Connecticut's Third Congressional District for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. This initiative aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. On Saturday, April 30, local law enforcement officials will staff collection sites from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

"Across the country, families and communities are suffering the heartbreaking effects of addiction. One of the first steps we can take to stop addiction and save lives is to keep opioids and prescription drugs from falling into the wrong hands," said Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro. "National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is a critical step in our fight to end this epidemic, and I encourage everyone to join local law enforcement to dispose of extra or expired prescription drugs."

According to the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), "results from the 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) indicate that about 15 million people aged 12 or older used prescription drugs non-medically in the past year, and 6.5 million did so in the past month." The same report cited that 54.2 percent of respondents said that they obtained the prescription drugs they were abusing free from a relative's medicine cabinet.

Across the state and country, local law enforcement officials are staffing collection sites where individuals can bring old and/or expired prescriptions to ensure they are disposed of properly.
