Congressman Collins Condemns Obama Administration for Jeopardizing National Security

Statement

Date: April 12, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Collins issued the following statement in response to reports that the Obama Administration is accelerating the refugee vetting process from the current standard of 18-24 months down to 3 months, dramatically shortening the vetting period. Congressman Collins issued the following statement in reaction to the news:

"Accelerating the timeline to admit and resettle refugees from countries that are hotbeds of terrorism is a threat to our national security. Despite serious risks, the Obama administration decided being politically correct is more important than the safety of the American people. Abruptly dropping the amount of time it will take to vet people raises serious concerns that there will be a less comprehensive process that will not screen out those seeking to take advantage of our system."

"I have called on the Administration to halt the admission of Syrian refugees until a thorough vetting process can be implemented. Additionally, as a cosponsor of the Refugee Program Integrity Restoration Act, I believe that Congress needs to assert authority over the admission of refugees, to ensure a secure and thorough vetting process. In light of the tragic attacks in Brussels and around the world recently, we need to be more cautious than ever. Now is not the time to make our vetting process less secure by rushing decisions."
