Angie Craig Decries Jason Lewis' Recent Comments On Gun Violence

Statement

Date: Dec. 3, 2015

Today, Angie Craig, who is seeking the DFL endorsement in Minnesota's Open Second Congressional District, released the following statement in response to a post from GOP candidate Jason Lewis which read, "More gun controls won't stop domestic terror; more immigration controls (inc. 'refugees') and border security will. Time to get serious."

"It's absolute lunacy to suggest that immigration has anything to do with ongoing rash of gun violence in this country," Craig said. "To conflate the issues of domestic mass shootings and immigration is either the worst, most cynical, kind of politics or just plain ignorant. We should be focused on common sense ideas to curb the ongoing threat of gun violence. Instead of discussing the merits of universal background checks, closing the gun show and online sales loopholes, keeping guns out of the hands of all domestic abusers, banning high capacity magazines, preventing known terror suspects from buying guns legally, and improving the mental healthcare system in our country, Jason Lewis chose to attack immigrants in a ridiculous attempt to confuse the issue.

"Sadly, Jason Lewis knows that what he said was stupid. He just doesn't care, because he knows that it will incite the far-right voters he's courting in his Republican primary. We should expect nothing less from a man that made his living throwing rhetorical bombs for the fringe far-right on the radio. Now more than ever, our country needs leadership willing to engage in thoughtful and respectful dialogue about how to tackle our nation's challenges -- not a carnival barker that would have you believe that qualifies him for the House of Representatives."
