Texans Deserve Better Than Obamacare

Statement

Date: June 4, 2015

As a proud conservative Texan, I know we deserve better than Obamacare. Heath care decisions should be made by you and your doctor, not by Washington, D.C. bureaucrats!

Obamacare is a flawed and failed policy. I have voted more than 50 times to repeal and dismantle this ill-conceived, disastrous healthcare law.

Rather than having Washington bureaucrats make decisions for Americans, we need to restore the doctor-patient relationship and leave the decision-making in the hands of doctors, patients, and families. Americans deserve quality healthcare at affordable prices but Obamacare does the opposite. In fact, Obamacare has raised insurance costs on the majority of Americans and small businesses.

There's a conservative answer to Obamacare: the American Health Care Reform Act! This bill encourages free marketplace innovation to personalize and lower the costs of insurance coverage as well as provide individuals and families the freedom of choice to decide which policy best fits their needs. In fact, the ANCRF contains no new mandates and encourages more competitive markets to personalize and lower the cost of insurance coverage. I'm proud to co-sponsor the AHCRF and support common sense reforms that assist people in getting the care they deserve.

This isn't the first effort to reign in Obamacare. My Republican colleagues and I recently passed the Restoring Americans' Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act. This bill eliminates onerous taxes, the individual and employer mandates, an Obamacare slush fund, and lifts unnecessary burdens on employers and employees. The bill also prohibits federal funding for abortion providers, while funding community health centers to help direct more resources to women's health care.

The Restoring American's Healthcare Freedom Reconciliation Act not only repeals Obamacare and lessens the tax burden on hard working Americans, it will reduce our federal deficit by $516 billion. A sizeable portion of those savings would come from an increase in economic activity, labor supply, and compensation. This bill provides real relief to individuals, families, workers and our economy at large!

Unfortunately, President Obama cares less about the will of the people, and more about saving his signature legislation, and vetoed this bill. This comes as no surprise but is still a disappointment and a reminder of why it is imperative that we elect a Republican to the White House that won't veto the repeal of Obamacare.

I recognize healthcare reform is needed. Yet, Central Texans, we are all very well aware of the ills of Obamacare and know that there is a better way to tackle America's health care challenges.

In the end, the answer isn't more government. I will keep fighting for better health care for all Americans, and keeping Washington out of Texans' health care decisions.
