Polis Statement on Unanimous Passage of Email Privacy Act out of House Judiciary Committee

Rep. Jared Polis (CO-02), released the following statement today following the House Judiciary Committee's markup and unanimous passage of the Email Privacy Act (H.R. 699), 28-0. The Email Privacy Act would modernize the Electronic Communication Privacy Act (ECPA), which hasn't been updated since 1986. The bill has the largest amount of support of any bill in the House of Representatives with over 300 bipartisan sponsors. The popular online privacy bill is sponsored by Polis and Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-KY).

"Procedures to access your old email should require a warrant, just as it does for your voicemails or letters," said Polis. "As a result of Congress's failure to keep pace with technological developments, every American is at risk of having their emails warrantlessly searched by government agencies."
