Governor Hassan's Statement on Signing "Brandon's Law"

Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement after signing today House Bill 1225, permitting high school students who are members of the armed forces to wear their uniforms at graduation, also known as "Brandon's Law":

"We are all incredibly proud of and have profound respect for the brave service and sacrifices of our dedicated service members, and it is only right that we afford them the opportunity to demonstrate the same pride in their commitment to protecting their fellow citizens."

"In 2014, New Hampshire was devastated by the tragic loss of Brandon Garabrant, who was bravely serving his nation in Afghanistan. A volunteer firefighter and dedicated Marine, Brandon was committed to serving his fellow citizens, and he had previously wanted to wear his dress uniform to his high school graduation. Unfortunately, he was denied that opportunity."

"By permitting high school students who are members of the United States Armed Forces to wear their uniforms at their graduation, Brandon's Law is a fitting tribute to Brandon's legacy of service and a fitting way to ensure that others like Brandon will have the opportunity to demonstrate their pride in their country and in their service during one of life's milestones. I am proud to sign this bipartisan bill into law."
