Udall, Heinrich Announce $7.3 Million to Combat Homelessness in New Mexico

Today, U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich announced more than $7.3 million for nonprofit providers and local governments in New Mexico to combat homelessness throughout the state. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded the funding through the Continuum of Care Program, which supports efforts to quickly rehouse homeless individuals and families, minimize the trauma associated with losing a home, and help families become self-sufficient following their relocation.

Grant recipients include: Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless Inc., Barrett Foundation Inc., Catholic Charities, City of Albuquerque, Crossroads for Women, NewLife Homes Inc., St. Martin's Hospitality Center, Supportive Housing Coalition of New Mexico, Therapeutic Living Services Inc., County of Sandoval, Valencia Shelter Services for Victims of Domestic Violence, El Camino Real Housing Authority, San Juan County Partnership, Community Area Resource Enterprise, Casa Milagro Inc., City of Santa Fe, New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, Saint Elizabeth Shelter Corporation, DreamTree Project Inc., Town of Taos, Adobe Inc., City of Las Cruces, La Casa Inc., Mesilla Valley Community of Hope, and El Refugio Inc.

"Many organizations and local governments throughout New Mexico provide emergency shelter, transitional housing and critical support services to homeless families and individuals," Udall said. "I'm pleased that these grants will support partners on the ground working to help New Mexicans get back on their feet, and as a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I'll continue fighting for funding for our state's efforts to end homelessness and strengthen our communities."

"Local organizations across New Mexico are at the forefront of efforts to quickly rehouse families and individuals," Heinrich said. "These providers promote access to long-term housing while minimizing the trauma homelessness can cause. Stable housing is the foundation on which all other opportunity rests and allows individuals to get back on their feet. I will continue fighting to ensure our communities have the resources they need to combat homelessness."
