Blumenthal Statement on Supreme Court's 4-4 Decision in Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today released the following statement after the United States Supreme Court issued a 4-4 opinion in the case of Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association. Because the court was deadlocked, it was unable to conclusively resolve the case's outstanding legal question.

"Today's 4-4 decision once again exhibits a hamstrung Supreme Court, unable to make definitive pronouncements on some of today's most consequential legal questions. Judicial gridlock has costs -- uncertainty undermining investment and job creation, expenses resulting from additional litigation, ‎diminished respect for the Court itself. This impaired functioning is a direct result of unprecedented Republican obstruction, and I once again call on my colleagues to do their job and fairly consider Chief Judge Merrick Garland's nomination."
