Rep. Boozman Comments on Vote to Protect the American Flag
Washington, Jun 22 - Rep. John Boozman (R-AR) today issued the following comments after voting for a constitutional amendment that prohibits physical desecration of the American flag:
"The American flag represents the ideals that our country holds dear. It is one of our most honored and cherished symbols, uniting us in our darkest times and reminding us of the freedom and opportunity that we are blessed to have. It needs to be protected and a constitutional amendment will do that."
"As chairman of the House VA Economic Opportunities Subcommittee, I feel it is important to protect the symbol that so many brave men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice for. The flag serves as a rallying point for out troops in battle and desecration of it is a dishonor to America's servicemembers and our veterans."
"I am pleased that we took this action, on the eve of our nation's birthday, to show our servicemen and women serving in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world that we do not want the symbol they have been fighting for to be desecrated here at home."
H.J. Res. 10, the "Flag Desecration Resolution," was approved by the House of Representatives by a vote of 286-130, which is eight more votes than the 2/3-majority needed to pass a constitutional amendment. The amendment now goes to the Senate for their approval.
