Congressman Thompson Calls Killen Sentencing 'Long Time Coming'
Thursday, June 23, 2005

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, United States Representative Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS) released the following statement

"Today, the world witnessed the sentencing of Edgar Ray Killen, a preacher and Klansman who is responsible for the killings of three civil rights workers. Given the forty-one years that have passed since the killings, Killen has managed to cheat justice as the State cheated its people of the promise of equal protection under the law.

"Rather than hold this killer as a trophy, the challenge before us is to learn from the atrocities of the past and make life better for all so that the deaths of Goodman, Chaney and Schwerner will not have been in vain. No longer can we sit idly by and refuse to engage in meaningful action to remove the stain of our State and our Nation's racist, segregationist past."
