Congressman Aderholt Cosponsors The Parent's Right to Know Act

"Notifying a child's parents before giving that child prescription medication, including prescription contraception, is in the best interest of the child and the parents," said Congressman Aderholt.

Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today announced the introduction of the Parent's Right to Know Act of 2005. Congressman Aderholt is an original cosponsor of the legislation. This legislation aims to keep parents informed when a child is given prescription medicine. The Parent's Right to Know Act (PRTK) would address a serious health care flaw in the Public Health Act, which provides Title X clinics with federal funding.

The act would require clinics that receive federal funding under its Title X provision to notify parents five days before providing contraceptives to minors.

"Parents have the right to know if their children are being offered prescription contraceptives. Parental notification is crucial in protecting the health of our children and should be a right of parents. It is hard to believe that today a child can walk into a Title X clinic and be administered birth control, or other potentially harmful prescription medications, without parental notification.

"It is our responsibility to ensure that our children are receiving the best care and protection possible."
