Whitehouse Applauds International Climate Accord

Statement

Date: Dec. 12, 2015
Location: Newport, RI

U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) released the following statement on the historic agreement, announced in Paris today, to limit global greenhouse gas emissions:

"This is a major victory for our climate, our oceans, and our children. The Paris Agreement represents the commitment of over 180 countries--representing approximately 98 percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide--to avoid the worst effects of climate change like drought, flooding, and extreme weather. It will also speed the transition to a clean energy economy. The Agreement is rigorous, requires transparency, and puts in place a framework to further reduce emissions over time. I applaud Secretary Kerry and our American negotiators and all of the parties involved for coming together for the good of our planet and future generations."
