Senator Ayotte's Statement on Senate Passage of Ban on Internet Access Taxes

Today, the Senate voted overwhelmingly to approve the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015, which included a provision backed by U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte to permanently ban Internet access taxes. The legislation now heads to the President's desk for signature. Ayotte has led efforts in the Senate to keep the Internet free of these onerous taxes, and she helped reintroduce the bipartisan Internet Tax Freedom Forever Act last year.

"I'm pleased that the Senate has finally approved a permanent ban on Internet access taxes," said Senator Ayotte. "Burdensome tax restrictions would impede our thriving e-commerce sector, and this provision will help ensure that the Internet remains a driving force for jobs and our economy."

The original Internet Tax Freedom Act (ITFA) was enacted in 1998, and prevented state and local jurisdictions from imposing new taxes on the Internet and multiple discriminatory taxes on Internet Businesses.
