Ayotte Statement on Expected White House Plan to Close Guantanamo

Statement

Date: Feb. 22, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte released the following statement today regarding reports that the White House is expected to release its plan tomorrow for closing the Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention facility:

"Today's news reports indicate that the president is doubling down on a dangerous plan to close Guantanamo - a move that I will continue to fight in the Senate.

"While the administration asserts that transferring detainees and closing Guantanamo is in America's national security interests, they refuse to level with the American people regarding the terrorist activities and affiliations of the detainees who remain at Guantanamo. In fact, the administration is almost four weeks late in meeting a statutory deadline requiring them to submit a report to Congress regarding the remaining Gitmo terrorists - which continues an ongoing pattern of obfuscation and disregard for the law.

"The American people have a right to expect that the administration will be transparent and honest with them about the activities and associations of the terrorists who remain at Guantanamo, and the administration's refusal to do so only underscores the fact that closing Guantanamo will make Americans less safe."
