Duckworth Applauds Kirk's SCOTUS Stance, Calls for Action

Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Tammy Duckworth issued the following statement regarding Mark Kirk's announcement today -- after more than a week of silence in the face of pressure to make his position clear -- that he acknowledges President Obama's right and obligation to nominate an Associate Justice to the Supreme Court following the death of Antonin Scalia. On Monday, February 15th, Duckworth called on Kirk to make his position clear following Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's pledge that the Senate would not act on a nominee. Editorial boards around Illinois echoed Duckworth's call and encouraged Kirk to end his silence, including the Chicago Sun-Times and State Journal-Register (Springfield). Today, Duckworth said the following:

"I'm pleased Sen. Kirk has chosen under pressure to do the right thing and support the President's constitutional duty to nominate a Supreme Court nominee. He should go a step further, however, and demand Senators McConnell and Grassley end their obstruction and hold hearings and allow a vote on a nominee." -- Tammy Duckworth
