Issue Position

Long Island faces unique environmental challenges. As an Island, we are particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Our sole-source aquifer provides all of our drinking water. Steve has been a leader in protecting our water quality. He authored the legislation establishing the "Shed the Meds" Pharmaceutical Collection program to keep dangerous substances out of our water supply, created tougher penalties for illegal dumping and supported groundbreaking renewable energy initiatives. A large portion of the Third Congressional District lacks sewers, threatening not only our aquifers but coastal waters. Steve will fight for federal support to develop much needed sewer infrastructure to protect our water quality and promote responsible economic development.
