Today, I met with President Obama's choice to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court, Judge Merrick Garland.
Let me be clear with you, as I was with Judge Garland. My Republican colleagues and I intend to follow the 80 year precedent of not confirming a Supreme Court Justice during a Presidential election year. I strongly believe that the American people should have a say in filling this vacancy and therefore the next President should nominate the Justice to succeed Justice Scalia.
I remain firmly opposed to filling the vacancy on the United States Supreme Court this year. That means I will not advocate for hearings or a vote, nor will I support filling the vacancy with President Obama's pick after the election.
