Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement on Black History Month:
"Black History Month is about celebrating the ways in which African Americans have shaped our nation. Our history is rich with pioneering African Americans whose struggles and triumphs inspire our effort to create a more perfect union. People like Harriet Tubman, a native Marylander whose unwavering quest for universal freedom and equality serves as a reminder of what we can accomplish when we work hard for what is right, even in the face of great adversity. As the Treasury Department prepares to redesign the $10 bill, I've asked Secretary Lew to feature Harriet Tubman's portrait on the new bill, a move backed by her birthplace of Dorchester County and grassroots supporters across the country. We have many mountains to climb in the pursuit of true equality, but this is one symbolic way we can honor African Americans who have heroically fought to better our nation."
