Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen released the following statement after the Maryland Department of the Environment, in coordination with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), opened an investigation into a private lead inspector which may have improperly certified rental properties as lead-free:
"It is deeply disturbing that the health of hundreds of Marylanders could potentially be at risk because of irresponsible or ineffectual inspectors. Lead poisoning is the top environmental health threat to our children, so it is critical to have reliable inspectors to find problems before they have lifelong consequences. I will continue to be in contact with the EPA and the Maryland Department of the Environment to ensure that this investigation is thorough and conducted swiftly. Those responsible for any wrongdoing must be held accountable, and our communities deserve to know what will be done to prevent this from happening again."
