Van Hollen: Saving Safeway Jobs a Win for Maryland Workers

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen congratulated hundreds of employees at Safeway facilities in Maryland for preventing facility closures that would have led to disastrous job losses. After a hard-fought effort by the Teamsters and their union partners, supported by Congressman Van Hollen, Safeway has announced that the jobs will remain in Prince George's County.

"This victory shows the power of hardworking Marylanders who stand together to get results," said Congressman Van Hollen. "I was proud to stand on the picket line with the Teamsters to protect these good-paying jobs in our community. When jobs are protected and available for our talented workforce, our businesses, families, and communities are able to succeed."

Last year, Safeway announced that approximately 700 jobs at two facilities in Maryland were slated for elimination. Congressman Van Hollen worked closely with the Teamsters and their union partners to urge the companies' CEO's to reconsider the layoffs.
