Issue Position: Strengthen Our Economy and Create Good-Paying Jobs

Issue Position

I was one of eight kids. My mother took care of my siblings and me while my father worked in a factory. Although times were tight and we all had to pitch in, we made ends meet. We could do so because we had an economy that worked for us and for the middle class. That is why in Congress I will promote policies that help expand and improve the lives of the middle class. First and foremost, that means creating good-paying jobs here in Nevada.

Improve Infrastructure

As your Congresswoman, I will work to bring infrastructure development to Nevada. That includes widening I-15 and being a leader in the coalition to fund the construction of I-11 while continuing to work to make sure Nevada gets its fair share of federal infrastructure funding. In addition, I will be a champion for continuing to build and foster our tourist infrastructure which results in both construction and permanent jobs. This includes improving our airports and highways, as well as streamlining the process for potential foreign visitors to obtain visas so foreign visitors can bring their travel dollars here to Nevada.

Make Nevada a Leader in Renewable Energy Jobs

Nevada is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the growing green energy industry, especially solar and wind. We are fortunate to receive roughly 85% of the total potential sunshine per year, the highest of any major metropolitan area in the country. We also have wide open spaces, much of it government owned, with ridge lines that make great locations for generating wind power. That makes solar and solar energy more feasible here than elsewhere. We need to encourage more solar and wind farms to be built in Southern Nevada. Moreover, we should go beyond this, to encourage the research and construction of that solar and wind technology to also be in Las Vegas. This is a huge opportunity for our state and we need leadership that is willing to act upon it.

Help Small Businesses Succeed and Support American Manufacturing

Congress can be doing more to help small businesses obtain much-needed capital to get started and grow. I will work to expand the availability of SBA loans to American small business owners and increase local staff assistance for the 4th Congressional District. Congress can also be doing more to promote American manufacturing rather than letting more jobs move across our borders. For too long Congress has favored protecting the profits of big corporations that ship American jobs overseas. I will work to end tax breaks for corporations that move jobs offshore and fight against behind-closed-doors trade agreements that don't do enough to protect American jobs.

Get Nevada's Fair Share

Finally, Nevada needs to be more aggressive in securing competitive federal funding. Currently, Nevada is 50th out of 50 states in the amount of money we receive from federal competitive grants.

Capitalize on Advantages for Technology Jobs

We need to support the data archiving industry in Nevada and take advantage of the unique geographic opportunities Nevada offers to create the high-tech high paying jobs this industry can provide. I also will work hard to promote Nevada's strategic advantage in the development of drone technology. Nevada is one of only six states with FAA approval to use unmanned aerial vehicles in civilian airspaces and Congressional District 4 has vast open areas that can be used to develop this new technology. Nevada has a natural competitive advantage in this new industry to develop and create high paying jobs. In Congress, I will work to foster the streamlining of FAA regulations so this industry, which will be a vital source of economic development, can flourish here in Nevada.
