Keating Statement On North Korea's Nuclear Test

Statement

Date: Jan. 6, 2016
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

Congressman Bill Keating, Ranking Member of the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade Subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on the nuclear test conducted by North Korea.

"There is little doubt that North Korea conducted another test of its nuclear weapons capability; however, we cannot confirm whether their claim it was a hydrogen bomb are accurate as of yet. What we do know is that this reckless activity by a unpredictable leader presents a direct problem to the international community. We have seen overwhelming opposition to this test from North Korea's neighbors and across the world, including from China and Russia. As we continue to assess North Korea's claims, it is critical that we remain united on a path forward -- including increased sanctions. Further, this is a time for China and Russia to use their leverage with North Korea in assistance of our shared goal. As Ranking Member of the Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade Subcommittee, I have previously held hearings on North Korea's nefarious intentions and will move toward immediate Congressional oversight of this issue."
