Keating Statement On Donald Trump's Call To Ban Muslims In The US

Below is a statement from Rep. Bill Keating, Ranking Member of the Terrorism Subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs Committee, on the recent comments regarding Muslims from presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"To say Donald Trump's comments are reprehensible is a severe understatement. His beliefs go against the very foundation of our country and its values. Muslim-Americans are a respected part of the fabric of America -- they are our teachers, our doctors, our neighbors and friends. They fight in our Armed Forces and have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect us all.

"I don't think it's a coincidence that Trump made these comments right after a poll was released showing him no longer in the lead in Iowa. As a candidate for our nation's highest office, he is putting his ambition and reality star status ahead of our national security. His bravado puts a stain on our national discourse in the process.

"The real irony is that Trump has yet to recognize that he is running to be leader of the free world."
