In Wake of President Bush's Visit to Blair High School, Van Hollen Gives Bush Social Security Plan a Failing Grade

Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) today released the following statement following President Bush's visit to Silver Spring to discuss his Social Security plan.

"I welcome President Bush's visit to the Eighth Congressional District today because it provides this community with an opportunity to focus on the problems with his misguided Social Security plan. As the President has traveled around the country trying to sell his plan, the American people have grown increasingly skeptical. I believe his visit today will have the same result.

"In the President's Social Security meetings around the country, the White House has carefully screened the participants to avoid the tough questions. In that regard, it is interesting that the President came to Montgomery Blair High School at a time when school is out for the summer. I would invite the President to return to Blair High School in the Fall to discuss his plan before the entire student body. The Blair High School students are a very bright bunch and I am confident they would give the President's Social Security plan a failing grade when it comes to providing for their retirement security.

"The President's privatization plan turns a guaranteed benefit into a guaranteed gamble and takes the ‘security' out of Social Security. Democrats and Republicans need to come together to strengthen, not weaken, Social Security."
