Congressman Kevin Cramer released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released the final Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) report this morning. The preparation of the guidelines caused concern by many, including Members of Congress, when it considered areas such as environmental sustainability and tax policy, instead of purely nutritional evidence. "Thankfully the administration listened to reason and used science to develop the final 2015 Dietary Guidelines," said Cramer. "North Dakotans understand the importance of red meat to a healthy lifestyle. I look forward to continuing to enjoy North Dakota raised beef at my family's dinner table well into the future."
In March 2015, Cramer joined 70 of his House colleagues in a letter to HHS and USDA urging the final Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) be based on sound nutritional science and comply to the DGA charter passed by Congress. One of the highlights of the proposed recommendations which was not included in the final guidelines was the classification of lean red meat as not being part of a healthy diet.
