Huizenga Votes To Override President Obama's Veto, Protect Life, Repeal ObamaCare

Today, Congressman Bill Huizenga released the following statement after voting to override the President's veto of legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and repeal ObamaCare.

"Whether it is Tom struggling to provide insurance for his family in Kentwood, or Marge, in Wyoming, fighting to make sure her employees have coverage, it's clear that ObamaCare is failing to deliver quality and affordable health care to hardworking families and small businesses across West Michigan. I will continue to fight for the repeal of this fatally flawed program because true health care reform lowers cost, delivers quality care, and focuses on the patients that need it, not the bureaucrats who administer it.

"I am proud to stand for life and support overriding the President's veto of legislation to defund Planned Parenthood. The federal government should encourage life not assist in taking it. Instead of supporting an organization that puts its own financial interests ahead of women and children, why not invest in federally qualified health centers and rural health clinics that do not perform abortions? We can achieve this while also ensuring that women have access to high quality medical care. In fact, here in Michigan, FQHC's and rural clinics outnumber Planned Parenthood locations 20 to 1.

"Planned Parenthood has made the decision to prioritize abortion over women's health. Their own numbers reflect this harsh reality. Since Planned Parenthood has made this decision, they should do so without receiving assistance from hardworking taxpayers. It is my fervent hope that the next President will sign this legislation into law."

Background:

Cancer screening and prevention services have dropped by 27% in just one year, and by 57% since 2010
Contraceptive services dropped by nearly 18% in just one year, and are down 20% since 2010
STI/STD prevention and treatment services are down nearly 6%, and "other services" are down by 27% over one year
Abortions made up 94% of Planned Parenthood's pregnancy resolution services, while prenatal care and adoption referrals accounted for only 5% and 0.6% respectively
For every adoption referral, Planned Parenthood performed 160 abortions
Despite the drop in services provided, Planned Parenthood reported nearly $59 million in excess revenue for the fiscal year, and more than $1.4 billion in net assets
