Rep. Young Responds To Obama White House's Threat To Veto Counterterrorism Legislation

Statement

Congressman Todd Young (R-IN) released the following statement in response to the Obama White House's threat to veto House-passed legislation that prohibits funds from being released to Iranian individuals linked to terrorism:

"Today the House passed a bill that does one key thing: it keeps President Obama from releasing funds to Iranians involved in terrorism," said Young. "Evidently, such prohibitions would lead to the collapse of President Obama's legacy nuclear deal and as such, the White House said it must veto the bill."

"President Obama's willingness to veto counterterrorism measures for fear of spoiling his legacy suggests Congress must take a different tack if we want to keep Americans safe. When every bill countering Iranian aggression is deemed a threat to Obama's nuclear deal, Congress should get creative and turn to mechanisms that don't require his presidential blessing."

"The resolution I drafted to create a Select Committee to oversee Iran's illicit behavior can be established without requesting permission from President Obama. With 60 lawmakers already signed onto the bipartisan effort, my legislation would provide the House of Representatives a mechanism to effectively investigate, communicate, and elicit a coherent strategy to respond to Iran's continued threat as the largest state-sponsor of terror."

"Nothing has changed in terms of the Islamic Republic of Iran's dangerous capabilities and its intention to use those illicit capabilities to export terror around the world. We simply cannot afford to lose sight of the threat posed by Iran."
