Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement after signing Senate Bill 380, establishing the drinking water and groundwater trust fund and establishing the New Hampshire drinking water and groundwater advisory commission:
"Clean drinking water is essential to public health and public safety, and in turn, a thriving economy. As we work to clean water across the state that was contaminated by MtBE, we must have a plan ready for funds from the MtBE settlement and lawsuits so that we can continue this important work.
"This bipartisan legislation creates a trust fund that will ensure that these are used for their intended purpose -- removing MtBE contamination -- if the previous decisions stand, which is critical to our ongoing clean-up efforts. I commend legislators from both parties for supporting this common-sense measure, and I am pleased to sign this bipartisan bill into law so that we can ensure access to safe and clean drinking water now and into the future."
