Statement from Governor Hassan on House Passage of Drug Forfeiture Bill

Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement on passage by the House of Representatives of House Bill 636, relative to forfeiture of property, which limits drug forfeiture cases and directs funds in those cases to the General Fund:

"The heroin and opioid crisis is the most pressing public health and safety challenge facing New Hampshire, and as we continue working to combat this horrible epidemic, it is critical that those on the front lines have the resources they need to protect our communities. Drug forfeiture funds support the Attorney General's Drug Task Force and are critical to local law enforcement efforts as they work to remove illicit drugs from our streets and arrest dealers. This bill would only exacerbate the U.S. Department of Justice's recent decision to defer equitable sharing payments under the Asset Forfeiture Program -- which negatively affects the ability of local law enforcement to keep our communities safe -- and I will veto it if it reaches my desk."
