Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement on the announcement that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is requiring class-wide safety labeling changes for immediate-release opioid pain medications, including a new boxed warning about the serious risks of misuse, abuse, addiction, overdose and death:
"As we work to prevent the overprescribing of opioids in New Hampshire through improved provider training and updated prescribing rules, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's new labeling requirement for immediate-release opioids warning about the serious risks of misuse, abuse, addiction, overdose and death will help build on our efforts. I applaud the FDA for taking this important step, and I continue to call on them to take additional steps as outlined in the recommendations that my fellow Governors and I put forward for federal action to help combat the heroin and opioid crisis, including additional work on abuse-deterrent formulations of opioid painkillers by the administration."
