Congressman Collins Applauds Court's Rejection of President Obama's Executive Amnesty

Statement

Today, Judiciary Committee member Doug Collins issued the following statement after a 2-1 ruling by the United States 5th Circuit Court of Appeals declared that President Obama's proposed executive actions on immigration were likely illegal, and an overreach of his authority.

"This is the second time that a court has rejected President Obama's attempted expansion of his unlawful executive amnesty proposal," said Congressman Collins. "The Court's decision is a victory for the rule of law, and the lawful immigrants who have come to this country the right way. Allowing millions of people to cross the border illegally--and then rewarding them for their actions--strains federal, state, and local resources."

"The President's job is to enforce the laws that Congress- elected representatives of the people- have passed. President Obama's attempts to circumvent Congress and ignore the law only make the problem worse and encourage future law-breaking. Motivated by his political agenda, his decision to simply go around Congress is unacceptable, and it has fallen to the court to enforce the limits of Presidential power. I am relieved to see the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals take action to prevent the Administration's continued attempts to ignore our country's immigration laws."

"Georgia is one of the 26 states in the lawsuit against the proposed expansion of executive amnesty. In Georgia, we have had to face the effects of one the highest illegal immigrant populations in the nation for years, and have seen the strain it puts on our communities. This decision by the court effectively halts the President's plans for expanded amnesty, and underscores the need for a better way forward on an issue that's been at the forefront of the national debate for many years."
