Sessions: The Customs Bill is a Victory for Conservativees

Statement

U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, today issued the following statement in regard to Speaker Paul Ryan sending the Trade Facilitation and Trade Enforcement Act of 2015 to President Obama's desk:

"As a strong believer in American exceptionalism, I know that when America competes in the global marketplace, America wins. Today we took a positive step towards unleashing America's trade capabilities and increasing U.S. competitiveness across the globe by sending the Customs bill to the president's desk.

"On this bill I proudly worked with my friend Congressman Steve King from Iowa to ensure that the President could not use free trade deals to circumvent American sovereignty and ignore our nation's immigration laws. Specifically, we strengthened an amendment offered by Senator Ted Cruz in the Senate that explicitly states that the president cannot change immigration law through trade agreements or obligate us to expand visas.

"As Chairman of the Rules Committee I deeply value my opportunity to work with my fellow conservatives to craft good policy. The president's signature on this legislation will be the product of our hard work and a huge victory for conservatives."
