Statement from Governor Hassan on New CDC Prescription Guidelines

Statement

Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announcement of new guidelines for doctors to consider alternative treatments before prescribing opioids:

"It is clear that the heroin and opioid crisis stems in part from the overuse, misuse and abuse of addictive prescription opioids, which is why we have been working in New Hampshire to prevent the overprescribing of opioids by improving provider training and working with providers to develop updated prescribing rules for the boards governing all prescribers. As Vice Chair of the National Governors Association Health and Human Services Committee, I worked with Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker to help develop a series of recommendations from the nation's Governors for federal action, which included the need for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. I applaud the CDC for taking this important step, and I encourage all doctors to follow these new guidelines as we continue working at all levels to combat the heroin and opioid crisis and save lives."
