Gov. Scott: Fort Lauderdale Area Added More Than 27,000 Jobs Over the Year

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Fort Lauderdale area added 27,200 private-sector jobs over the year in January. The area's unemployment rate declined by 0.8 percent over the year to 4.7 percent in January. Florida has added 1,060,800 private sector jobs since 2010. Governor Scott will celebrate this great news today on his five-city "Million, Billion Jobs Victory Tour."

Governor Scott said, "I am excited to announce the Fort Lauderdale area added more than 27,000 new jobs for local families over the year. We are also celebrating $1 billion in tax cuts in two years and the creation of more than one million jobs across the state on our "Million, Billion Jobs Victory Tour' today. While this economic growth is great news, our job will not be over until we make Florida the number one destination for job creation."

The industries with the largest job gains over the year in the Fort Lauderdale area were professional and business services with 5,900 new jobs; trade, transportation, and utilities with 5,500 new jobs; and construction with 4,700 new jobs. In January, the Fort Lauderdale area added the most jobs of all the state's metro areas in financial activities and manufacturing. Fort Lauderdale job demand was ranked fourth in the state with 24,520 openings, including 6,664 openings in high-wage, high-skill science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.

Florida created 36,000 private-sector jobs in January, and a total of 1,060,800 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for January remains steady at 5.0 percent. In January, more than 28,843 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Broward and the state's other 24 regional workforce boards.
