Gov. Scott: Miami Area Added More Than 23,000 Jobs Over the Year

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Miami area added 23,300 new private-sector jobs in January over the year. The area's unemployment rate declined by 0.6 percent over the year to 5.6 percent in January. Florida has added 1,060,800 private sector jobs since 2010. Governor Scott will celebrate this great news today on his "Million, Billion Jobs Victory Tour" at TUUCI in Miami.

Governor Scott said, "More than 23,000 new jobs were added and the unemployment rate continued to drop in the Miami area, which is great news. Our hard work to cut $1 billion in taxes over the past two years has helped our economy grow and add over one million jobs in five years. Today we are celebrating these accomplishments across Florida on our "Million, Billion Jobs Victory Tour."

The industries with the greatest job growth over the year in the area were education and health services with 5,500 new jobs; construction with 5,100 new jobs; and professional and business services with 4,600 new jobs. The Miami area continues to have the third highest job demand in Florida in January with 31,834 job openings, including 7,977 openings for high-wage, high-skill science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupations.

Florida created 36,000 private-sector jobs in January, and a total of 1,060,800 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for January remains steady at 5.0 percent. In January, more than 28,843 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource South Florida and the state's other 24 regional workforce boards.
