Harper Praises Passage of Default Prevention Act

U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper (R-Miss.) today issued the following statement praising the passage of H.R 692 -- the Default Prevention Act in the House of Representatives by a vote of 235 to 194:

"The House took a responsible step to make it clear to our creditors and to world markets that the United States will not default," said Harper. "If the debt limit is reached, under H.R. 692, the Treasury Secretary may continue to borrow above the limit for the sole purpose of ensuring that bondholders and Social Security beneficiaries continue to be paid."

"In the event Congress needs more time to determine a long-term solution to avoid default, this bill provides the additional time necessary for Congress to do so. I will not risk the full faith and credit of the United States because of political games being played by this Administration."
