Polis, Buck Statements on Unfair FEMA Recoupment

Press Release

Date: March 1, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) and Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) released the following statements regarding legislation protecting natural disaster victims from unfair Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recoupments. The FEMA Disaster Assistance Reform Act, which passed in the House yesterday, included important requirements that safeguard individuals who have been harmed by misfortunes, such as the recent floods throughout Colorado. Both members have been strong advocates for passing this common-sense legislation.

"This provision will protect Coloradans and Americans who're recovering from a difficult time in their life," said Polis. "Natural disasters are a traumatic situation for families and individuals both emotionally and financially. Waiving debt in the instance where homeowners were overpaid through no fault of their own, is a simple way to reduce an already devastating experience."
