Van Hollen Statement on Republican Refusal to Hold OMB Hearing on President Obama's Budget

Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after the Chairmen of the House and Senate Budget Committees announced they will not hold a hearing hosting the Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to review the president's FY 2017 Budget:

"This appalling decision to reject longstanding, bipartisan tradition is the latest evidence that the Tea Party controls this Congress

"The President may refuse to follow the Tea Party's harmful obsession with slashing social safety net programs like Medicare and Medicaid, threatening retirement security for our seniors by privatizing Social Security, and protecting special interest loopholes for the ultra-wealthy -- but he still deserves to be heard.

"Regardless of what Republicans expect the President to propose, the House Budget Committee needs to uphold its responsibilities. It is a sad day for this institution when Congress snubs the President and the interests of working families with such an egregious abdication of our duty to the American people."
