Murray Announces Plan to Protect Students

At a press conference at Woodbrook Middle School in Lakewood, Senator Murray joined 3 school superintendents, the Lakewood Mayor, teachers, counselors and students to announce her proposal to help schools cope with dramatic changes in enrollment caused by military deployments and base realignment.

Currently, the Clover Park School District faces the closure of three elementary schools because of the departure of local military families. Meanwhile, the Central Kitsap and Bethel School Districts will need to accommodate thousands of incoming students because of the Pentagon's recent base realignment plan.

Murray's proposal to be offered as an amendment to the Defense Appropriations bill will ensure schools are unharmed from these major changes in enrollment and it will also provide resources for school counselors to ensure students of military personnel get the support they need.
