U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte today released the following statement regarding reports that Defense Secretary Ash Carter has submitted to the president a plan to close Guantanamo Bay and move the remaining detainees to American soil:
"If the Obama administration were to move Guantanamo detainees to the United States, that would ignore the will of the majority of Americans, make all of our citizens less safe, and represent a blatant and serious violation of the plain language of the law. Instead of sending a plan to Congress to bring hardened terrorists to American communities, the administration should instead be sending Congress a plan for detaining and interrogating future terrorist detainees at Guantanamo to gather the intelligence necessary to prevent future attacks and protect our country."
